PRO 1

The Marriage Penalty means married couples pay more tax than two singles making the same money.  This is like a penalty for being married and must encourage some people to skip the marriage vows.

CON 1.1

Its estimated that removing the marriage penalty will cost bout 31 billion dollars. Either services will have to be cut or taxes raised other ways. If Congress wants to  eliminate this penalty, it must reduce spending or make up the difference in some other way. Since married couples pay about three-quarters of all income taxes, almost all ways of making up the revenue will place most of the burden right back on married couples.

PRO 2

Removing the marriage penalty would save 21 million couples an average of $1,400 per year.

CON 2.1

The average is so high because the rich will get back so much.  60% of American families will get $0 to $150 back. Families at the top of the income range would get $12,000 or more back. This is just another attempt by the republicans to give the rich a tax cut and make the little people think its good for them.

CON 3

Its cheaper for a married couple with one household to live, than two singles with two houses.
